The UC Center for Public Engagement with Science (PEWS) is happy to announce our most recent graduate student interns and fellows! These students are integral to the functioning of PEWS, and we are excited to have such a talented group to work with this year. Read on to learn more about these latest additions to the PEWS team!

Mythili Emani – Web and Media Intern

Mythili Emani is currently a Master of Design student at DAAP in Mumbai, India. Before coming to UC, she completed her bachelor’s degree in design, specializing in industrial design, at Srishti Manipal Institute of Design in Bangalore. She is deeply passionate about empathy-driven design and promoting responsible consumption while exploring how industrial design can integrate into that cause. By joining UC, she aims to develop her skills in design research to address social design and problem-solving. She also intends to utilize her expertise in various design tools to enhance problem-solving within the field of design.

Maddie Gaetano – Sustainability Fellow

Maddie Gaetano is a sixth year PhD candidate in the Department of Geoscience. Her work applies paleontology methods to modern conservation efforts, with a focus on migratory caribou in Alaska. She’s interested in why female caribou grow antlers (they’re the only female deer that do so!) and how antlers are used as a nutrient source by caribou and other Arctic animals. Growing up, Maddie spent most of her summers hiking in beautiful Upstate New York and has been passionate about responsible stewardship of natural resources since. Her research in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge during her PhD has only increased her enthusiasm for sustainability and environmental protection.

Linn Howard – Science Harvest Intern

Linn Howard is a first year Geology PhD student at UC. They recently received their Master’s at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in Geosciences. They are passionate about spreading scientific literacy and the love of science to both kids and adults alike. Their most recent outreach program was back home in Lincoln NE where they developed, ran, and taught a weekly Sunday program at a local church. They’re excited for this opportunity in their new home of Cincinnati to meet and interact with their new community!

Stephanie Lam, M.A. (She / They) is an Asian American doctoral Candidate of Community Psychology. She is training with the Community and Organizational Research for Action Program, in the department of psychology at the University of Cincinnati. Stephanie’s current research focuses on the intersection of racial and climate justice. Specifically, she is focused on recording the experiences and perspectives of BIPOC youths who engage in climate justice actions. Her work process takes the form of collaboration with the ingredients of co-collaboration, fluid negotiation, and creative processes. Stephanie strives to create spaces of care, creativity, and collaboration in whatever project she is engaging with. She is currently a board member serving as secretary of the Community Engagement Collective (CEC), and community-based nonprofit organization serving Cincinnati Communities.
