Are you a UC graduate student interested in sustainability? Get to know other like-minded graduate students by joining our newly formed Graduate Sustainability Community! This community, which met for the first time during Sustainability@UC Week in an event sponsored by the School of Environment and Sustainability (SEaS) and the Center for Public Engagement with Science (PEWS), will continue to meet throughout the year to provide opportunities for sustainability-inclined graduate students to connect. Find out more about how you can get involved below!
Social event: Civic Garden Center Volunteer Kick-Off Party
Graduate students who attended the first community meeting during Sustainability@UC Week expressed an interest in participating in sustainability-related volunteer opportunities as a means of socializing with other UC grad students and also making a difference in the broader community.
The first of these coordinated volunteer events will be the Civic Garden Center Volunteer Kick-Off Party on March 30th from 12:00-2:00pm. This event, organized by the Civic Garden Center (CGC), is a great way to meet other volunteers around Cincinnati, learn about the CGC’s upcoming projects and opportunities, and enjoy pizza, snacks, and drinks while getting to know your fellow UC grad students.
Although the Graduate Sustainability Community will be organizing a group attendance for UC grad students, anyone is welcome at the volunteer kick-off party! Learn more about CGC volunteering here.
This first volunteer meet-up of the Graduate Sustainability Community is being organized by PEWS Sustainability Fellows Madison Gaetano and Stephanie Lam. If you are interested in participating, please email engagingscience@uc.edu.
Opportunity: Science Harvest
Interested in outreach and public engagement? Learn how to turn your research into fun and educational activities for the community! Science Harvest is a PEWS initiative that brings hands-on science activities to kids of all ages at the Northside Farmer’s Market. We are actively looking for graduate students to become involved by participating in a preplanned activity or designing one of your own!
PEWS Science Harvest Intern Linn Howard is available to help anyone interested in turning their research into an engaging outreach activity. We welcome new ideas for activities and demonstrations at the market!
Interested? Fill out this form or email us at engagingscience@uc.edu with any questions!
Building Community
Graduate students throughout the University of Cincinnati have demonstrated continued commitment to sustainability, within both their personal and professional lives. The interdisciplinary nature of sustainability provides exciting opportunities to work with collaborators and develop social and professional communities across disciplines. However, it can also be challenging to find potential collaborators and communities beyond one’s academic department. PEWS and SEaS are committed to the growing graduate student sustainability community on campus. Our goal is to support social events as well as academic and professional development opportunities for graduate students interested in sustainability. We are seeking feedback from current graduate students, so that we may appropriately assess the needs of this community on campus.
The form linked below asks several questions about the current needs of graduate students across departments, as well as the types of community programming in which they would participate. We encourage interested graduate students to complete the form, so that your responses can shape what we hope will become a thriving community.
