Introducing PEWS Summer Fellows

The Center for Public Engagement with Science (PEWS) is lucky to have a great team of graduate and undergraduate fellows this summer, including a few new faces! Meet the newest members of the PEWS team.

Mohammad Areeb – UHP Discover Student

Mohammad Areeb is a third-year Computer Science student at UC with a passion for the intersection of technology, creativity, and public engagement. Having a background in programming, outreach, and digital content creation, he has an interest in exploring how technology can not just be utilized to build, but to bring together – to empower others through intelligent design and communication. Mohammad’s experience ranges from autonomous robots to data-driven social media strategies and outreach as an International Student Ambassador. He is most motivated by high-impact projects that address real-world problems – like developing digital literacy and expanding technology access – and is excited to apply his skills to give back and create an impact.

Maura Bennett – FCC Science Fellow

Hi! My name is Maura Bennett, and I’m a PhD student in Health and Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Cincinnati. My research focuses on injury risk reduction in youth athletes through biomechanical analysis.

I earned both my undergraduate and master’s degrees in Exercise Science from Northern Kentucky University. I grew up playing soccer and have now been coaching for five years, which has shaped my passion for applying research to real-world sport environments.

I got involved with the FCC project because I’m excited about the opportunity to combine science, education, and sport in a way that can positively impact youth development.

Qianrong Gong – FCC Science Fellow

Qianrong Gong is a second-year PhD student in the Department of Philosophy. Her work applies phenomenological theories and methodologies to action theory, social epistemology, and philosophy of science. She is interested in agents’ decision-making and actions regarding non-ideal conditions, including normative uncertainty, uncertainty of collaborative commitment, and noncompliance. Qianrong has always been an enthusiastic sports fan since teenager time. Tennis, skating, and soccer are her favorite sports to watch. For her, sports are always a heavily science-and-tech-driven industry and a lifestyle in which the body gets proper emphasis and attention. Her research in philosophy of action and phenomenology thus contributes into her passion about the development of the science field trip with FC Cincinnati. Qianrong is also the editorial assistant for New Book Series: Elements in Public Engagement with Science – UC Center for Public Engagement with Science. She is happy that her work will be part of the efforts in bringing specialized knowledge and cutting-edge research in public engagement with science to a broader audience.

Zoe Webb – FCC Science Fellow

I am currently a first year PhD student in the Health & Rehabilitation Sciences program in the College of Allied Health Sciences. My research interests center broadly around motivation to exercise and participate in healthy behaviors and what physiological factors may impact levels of motivation. Following completion of my program, I aspire to become an educator, so the FC Cincinnati project is the perfect way for me to learn skills in how to make science engaging and interesting.
