Science Through Dance: Upcoming Shows at UC

PEWS invites you to join for two upcoming events associated with Physics + Dance Lab @UC, an immersive week of using dance to explore quantum physics concepts! Both events are free and open to the public.

Event #1:

Physics and Dance Lab @UC Performance will take place on Friday August 7th from 6:00-8:00 pm at Patricia Corbett Theater, 290 W Corry St. The first half of this time will feature a performance, we then invite you to stay for discussion with the dancers and students!

This collaboratively created evening of dance is the culmination of a week of exploration at the Physics + Dance Lab. Developed over the course of the program, the featured dance pieces will use dance to represent complex concepts from quantum physics, while simultaneously embodying and humanizing the science. There will be a talk-back following the showcase, giving audience members the opportunity to ask the dancers and program facilitators about the process of using dance to understand and explore physics concepts, as well as their experience creating and performing the dance pieces.

The performance is free, but we ask attendees to register in advance to help us ensure adequate preparations and parking vouchers: Physics + Dance Lab @UC Performance Registration

We recommend parking in the Calhoun Garage or CCM Garage. While CCM Garage is closer, it is possible that parking won’t be available at CCM. Calhoun Garage is also nearby, and parking will be available there.

Event #2:

We Lift Each Other is a documentary that will be screened on Thursday August 6th from 5:30-7:00 pm at Main Street Cinema in Tangeman University Center, 2766 UC MainStreet. The film, which follows veterans as they use dance to find pathways toward hope, connection, and recovery, will be shown ahead of Purple Heart Day.

We Lift Each Other is a powerful documentary that reveals how transformative art can change lives, heal communities, and illuminate the extraordinary resilience of our nation’s veterans. The film follows a group of Asheville veterans in their work with Raleigh-based Black Box Dance Theatre in the summer of 2023. Through a healing-centered process, these veterans navigate recovery, reclaim their stories, and discover new pathways toward connection and hope. The collaboration culminated in a moving public performance at Asheville’s Wortham Center.

Through Black Box Dance Theatre’s healing-centered process, these veterans navigate recovery, reclaim their stories, and discover new pathways toward connection and hope. Their journey demonstrates how non-fiction dance can foster belonging, ignite resiliency, and mend what trauma has fractured. The project has been recognized statewide and nationally as a model of hope—a testament to the ability of the arts to transform lives.

The event is free, but we ask attendees to register in advance to help us ensure adequate preparations, parking vouchers, and popcorn!: We Lift Each Other Documentary Showing Registration

We recommend parking in the Campus Green Garage and following the signs to walk down Main Street to Tangeman University Center (location and path in pink above).
