We are very excited to announce that PEWS will be hosting a week of events focused on sustainability from January 29th to February 2nd, 2024. These events are supported by the Research2030 Initiative of the UC Office of Research and a UC Provost Office Faculty Award recently awarded to the PEWS Sustainability Leadership Team.
This week will feature, Dr. Mitchell Thomashow, a leader in environmental learning, with events geared towards students, educators, and the public. Events will include an educator’s lunch, student organization workshop, student Q&A and a keynote lecture by Dr. Thomashow. Find out more details below and on our website here.
Welcome Dr. Mitchell Thomashow
Dr. Mitchell Thomashow is a leader in sustainability initiatives and environmental learning. He is a former president of Unity College in Maine where he promoted a sustainability agenda. He also has served as the Chair of the Environmental Studies program at Antioch University in New England and has been the Director of the Presidential Fellows Program at Second Nature. Dr. Thomashow works to promote ecological awareness, environmental learning, and improvisational thinking through writing, advising and teaching.
Sustainability Education Lunch
PEWS invites UC faculty to join for a “Lunch n’ Learn” with Dr. Mitchell Thomashow focused on sustainability education. At this event, we will discuss the culture and leadership of sustainability within a higher education context, provide direction for sustainability solutions, and help craft instructional methods to facilitate effective sustainability education, with a focus on urban settings. This event is co-sponsored by the UC School of Environment and Sustainability (SEaS) and will take place Tuesday, January 30th, from 12:00pm to 1:30pm in Clifton Court Hall Room 5280.
Student Organization Workshop
Leaders of sustainability-focused student organizations at UC are invited to join Dr. Mitchell Thomashow for a conversation about sustainability at UC. This workshop will help prepare student leaders with the necessary skills to lead sustainability initiatives and conservations. The workshop will take place Thursday, February 1, 1:00pm to 3:30pm in 400B TUC.
Dr. Mitchell Thomashow will give a keynote lecture, “The Future of Environmental Learning,” that addresses the skills, interpretive frameworks, and insights to implement and improve sustainability-related education and action in Cincinnati. This event is free and open to all! The keynote lecture will take place Thursday, February 1, in Probasco Auditorium (2839 Clifton Ave, Cincinnati, OH 45220). Please join us for a reception at 6pm prior to the start of the talk at 7pm. Dr. Thomashow will be introduced by Dr. Valerio Ferme, Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost.
Student Q&A Coffee and Donuts
UC students are invited to join Dr. Mitchell Thomashow and PEWS Faculty Affiliate, Dr. Amy Townsend-Small, during her Intro to Environmental Studies class for a Q&A about Thursday’s keynote lecture on Friday morning, February 2, from 10:10am to 11:05am in UC Rec Center 3240. This is open to all interested students.
