The UC Center for Public Engagement with Science (PEWS) is pleased to present a video introduction to a new interdisciplinary book series, Elements in Public Engagement With Science. This series, initiated by PEWS and published through Cambridge University Press, is edited by a multidisciplinary and international editorial board, including PEWS Director Angela Potochnik and PEWS Curriculum and Pedagogy Director Melissa Jacquart. Qianrong Gong, UC Philosophy PhD student, serves as the Editorial Assistant for the series, with support from the UC Graduate College.
The video describes the motivation for the series (and for the Cambridge Elements more generally), indicates the range of intended topics, introduces the editorial board, and provides information for prospective authors.
The first volume in the series is currently in press. Authored by Potochnik and Jacquart, Public Engagement with Science: Defining the Project sets the stage for the series by examining the nature of public engagement with science, considering how a variety of disciplinary expertise is relevant to this area, and providing initial resources about the theory and practice of public engagement with science.
Several other volumes in the series are under contract and in development, authored by academics and engagement professionals with a wide range of expertise. In-progress volumes include:
- A Guide for Academic Researchers Conducting Science Outreach
- STEM Learning Ecosystems
- Citizen Science from the Ground Up: The Our Soil Project
- Building Capacity for Public Engagement on Solar Geoengineering
- Children’s Engagement with Science
- Communicating Climate Change: Current and Future Developments
- Working Partnerships – Materializing Indigenous Histories
- The Science of Science Communication: A Primer
- Scientists’ Responsibilities and Public Engagement
- Storytelling and Identity in Science Communication
- Understanding Misinformation
