Engaging Science summer fellowship

The final step of the Engaging Science sequence is a summer fellowship program. Students who have completed both the Sharing Science Experience workshop and the Public Engagement with Science seminar are eligible to apply to be Engaging Science Fellows.
The Fellowship is a 10-week commitment of approximately 8 hours per week. To be eligible for the fellowship, students must be largely available in Cincinnati over these dates. Some travel and conflicting commitments can be accommodated on a case-by-case basis.
Each Fellow is matched with a community partner organization, and most of the fellowship time is spent embedded in that organization. Fellows will (1) become familiar with the main projects of the organization; (2) learn and practice public engagement in that setting; and (3) plan, implement, and assess one public engagement with science initiative in collaboration with that organization.

Fellows also meet together with faculty mentors every second week to discuss fellowship and PEWS project expectations; experiences, highlights, and challenges of working with their community partners; professionalization topics tailored to Fellows’ interests; and presentations of Fellows’ PEWS projects.
Upon completion of the fellowship, all Fellows will submit a report on their PEWS project. Fellows are encouraged to give a conference presentation about their PEWS project, explore the possibility of a related publication, and engage in related professional development. Each Fellow has access to $1,000 to support presentation and/or publication of their PEWS projects and related professional development needs, and the facilitators will provide mentoring and feedback for Fellows exploring these opportunities beyond completion of the Fellowship.
