The UC Center for Public Engagement with Science (PEWS) offers a variety of workshops and trainings on topics related to public engagement with science for institutional and conference settings. Get in touch to learn how PEWS can support your educational and training needs in science communication, community outreach, pitch development, working across disciplines, and more!

Conference Workshops
PEWS has run workshops on effective public engagement with science and outreach development at conferences like the Philosophy of Science Association and the Southern Society for Philosophy and Psychology. Participants are guided through hands-on activities and reflections, and will come away with concrete ideas about how to implement public engagement with science at their own institutions.

Pitch Workshop
Communicating expert information in a way that is publicly accessible to a variety of audiences is a challenge for any researcher, from graduate students to professors. This PEWS-led workshop uses a number of exercises and techniques to help researchers create a pitch for their work that is clear, engaging, understandable, and concise.

Three Minute Thesis Advising
PEWS Pedagogy and Curriculum Director Melissa Jacquart and PEWS Postdoc Kate Nicole Hoffman have served as advisors for the UC Graduate College’s Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition, where graduate students are challenged to explain their research to non-specialists in three minutes, using only a single PowerPoint slide. PEWS advises on pitch content, as well as presentation and slide design.
