Last semester, the Center for Public Engagement with Science (PEWS) co-sponsored two Climate Justice World Cafés, organized by PEWS faculty affiliate Carlie Trott. These events brought together scholars from the University of Cincinnati (UC) and the University of Johannesburg (in October) and UC and the University of Bordeaux (in December) to discuss perspectives, current work, and critical questions on the climate crisis. Recordings of these events are now available on the PEWS Youtube channel!

International and Interdisciplinary Conversations

A climate justice perspective recognizes that climate risks and vulnerabilities, as well as the benefits and burdens of climate actions, are anything but equally distributed, and that climate shocks often exacerbate existing inequalities. Advancing climate justice means attending to the specific needs and interests of disproportionately affected groups and working alongside impacted communities to reverse these trends. Scholars across disciplines have a role to play in advancing climate justice — in educational, community, societal, and policy contexts. These World Café events brought together scholars from universities around the world to discuss their perspectives, current work, and critical questions on the climate crisis.  Panelists represented diverse, interdisciplinary backgrounds, including anthropology, psychology, poetry, education, political science, science and technology studies, communications, engineering, philosophy, statistics, and climate dynamics & modeling. Participants engaged in a critical discussion on one of the most pressing global challenges facing humanity today.
