We are happy to announce that Center for Public Engagement with Science (PEWS) is included among the featured programs for University of Cincinnati’s upcoming Day of Giving on Giving Tuesday, November 28th. Please consider making a gift. PEWS’s page for UC’s Day of Giving is here.

PEWS is an interdisciplinary effort whose mission is to enrich and expand the interface between science and public to benefit all stakeholders. PEWS trainings, programming, communications, and research bridge students, faculty and staff at UC to community partners and the public.

Our Story

Founded in 2017, PEWS is one of only a few academic centers nationwide working to improve public engagement with science and to study the outcomes and best practices of public engagement. PEWS takes an innovative approach to public engagement that emphasizes lived experiences and connecting with marginalized communities. PEWS uses a truly collaborative approach beyond academic researchers, but also with community partners including experts at museums and zoos, classroom teachers and more.

PEWS aims to establish itself as a centralized resource for students and faculty at UC and around the world, who want to communicate their research and ideas more effectively to the public. Its unique community-partnership model enables opportunities for students’ service learning and engagement beyond the classroom.

Our Need

With your generous gift, we can expand student opportunities and develop more public-facing events with our community partners. With increased interest in public engagement from students at UC emerging, it is important for PEWS to continue to support student training and internships, research opportunities and public outreach initiatives.

Donations will help support the center’s growth, events about science and the public at UC and around Cincinnati, web resources about science and the public, student internships with PEWS, as well as interdisciplinary research into public engagement with science.

Some of our accomplishments this year include the start of our Cincinnati Science Roundup, our monthly newsletter that features PEWS related activities in Cincinnati, the launch of our Engaging Science graduate course sequence, events about sustainability including the UC Sustainability Showcase and Awards, publications and presentations related to public engagement with science by students and faculty, and funding from the National Science Foundation, UC’s University Research Council and UC’s Provost Office.
