Sustainability@UC week is almost here! Join us next week for a series of events focused on sustainability around UC. There is still time to sign up for any of the events happening throughout the week. There are events for students, staff, faculty, and the public. Dr. Mitchell Thomashow will be joining us for many of these events.
About Dr. Thomashow
Dr. Mitchell Thomashow is a leader in sustainability initiatives and environmental learning. He works to promote ecological awareness, environmental learning, and improvisational thinking through writing, advising and teaching. He has previously served as the Chair of the Environmental Studies program at Antioch University New England where he founded an interdisciplinary environmental studies doctoral program. He also served as the president of Unity College in Maine, where he integrated concepts of ecology, sustainability, natural history, wellness, participatory governance, and community service into all parts of college and community life. Dr. Thomashow has also written multiple books about environmental education including To Know the World: A New Vision for Environmental Learning, and The Nine Elements of a Sustainable Campus.
Events throughout the week
On Tuesday, January 30th, there will be a Sustainable Lab Webinar for researchers interested in learning about sustainable practices in laboratory environments. This webinar is hosted in partnership with My Green Lab at 10:30am. Additionally, on January 30th, there will be an Educator’s Lunch for UC Faculty with Dr. Thomashow. This event is co-sponsored with the UC’s School of Environment and Sustainability (SEaS) and will focus on discussions of sustainability education.
On Thursday, February 1st, there will be a Student Workshop for sustainability focused student organization groups at 1pm in TUC. Students are invited to join Dr. Thomashow for a conversation about sustainability learning at UC. Later that evening, on February 1st, there will be a reception and keynote lecture by Dr. Thomashow in Probasco Auditorium. His talk “The Future of Environmental Learning” is free and open to the public and will focus on the skills, interpretive frameworks, and insights to implement and improve sustainability-related education and action in Cincinnati.
On Friday, February 2nd, UC students will have the opportunity to join Dr. Thomashow and PEWS Faculty Affiliate, Dr. Amy Townsend-Small, during her Intro to Environmental Studies class for a discussion and Q&A with Dr. Thomashow over coffee and donuts.
