Public lecture: The Future of Environmental Learning with Dr. Mitchell Thomashow

Join PEWS for a public lecture, “The Future of Environmental Learning,” by Dr. Mitchell Thomashow. There will be a reception at 6pm followed by the talk at 7pm. Dr. Thomashow has long been a leader of environmental education, has served as a university president, and has written multiple books including the Nine Steps to a Sustainable Campus and To Know the World: A New Vision for Environmental Learning. This event is part of PEWS’ Sustainability@UC week and is supported by Research 2030 Initiative of the UC Office of Research and UC Office of Provost.

Public lecture: The Miraculous from Material with Dr. Alan Lightman

Alan Lightman is a novelist, essayist, physicist and educator. Currently, he is Professor of Practice of Humanities at MIT. He will give a talk at UC titled “The Miraculous from Material.” The talk will show beautiful photographs of extraordinary natural phenomena with informal scientific explanations of each phenomenon. This talk is open to all!

Introduction to Sustainable Home Food Production

Grow your garden knowledge this spring as the Gorman Heritage Farm learn about different gardening techniques and walk through the garden with an expert! Join Jason Kamp as he shares his knowledge of home food production, and provides a guided tour of our very own raised beds, hoop house, and market garden. Great for beginners, this class will cover topics like building raised beds, creating healthy soil and site preparation and more. There are additional classes later in the spring as well. Cincinnati Museum Center, POMPEII: The Exhibition

Opening, Friday, February 16, Union Terminal, Cincinnati Museum Center, 1301 Western Ave, Cincinnati, OH 45203
Through 150 artifacts, POMPEII: The Exhibition tells the tale of a city hidden from view and forgotten for centuries. The exhibition includes an introductory theater, a reproduced atrium from a Roman villa, and holographic gladiatorial combat (a brand-new 3D experience that takes guests through the different stages of the Mt. Vesuvius eruption). This exhibit will be at the CMC from February 16 to June 28 with over 150 authentic artifacts that help bring the story of Pompeii to life and a simulated 4D eruption theater. Full Moon Walk: Groundhog Moon at Rowe Woods

Friday, February 23, 7:30 – 9:00 PM, Nature PlayScape parking lot, Rowe Visitor Center, Cincinnati Nature Center
Witness the night’s magic transform the trails as they marvel at the full moon and reveal natural history happenings on this guided hike. On a Full Moon Walk, you’ll take a 1-to-1.5-mile leisurely walk on a trail. Trails may be muddy during wetter times of the year, but they will do their best to keep you dry.  Based on registrations, you’ll have the option to choose a group according to your desired pace and peers.  Preregistration required. University of Cincinnati is excited to participate as a planning partner for this upcoming event, hosted by PEWS community partner, Green Umbrella. This year, the theme of the summit is moving “From Vision to Action.” Green Umbrella is currently seeking poster submission for this event and highly encourage submissions from students, faculty, community and non-profit leaders and others involved in sustainability work. Makers in Ed: Teacher Professional Development Application

The UC Ground Floor Makerspace, in collaboration with the Greater Cincinnati STEM Collaborative will be running the second offering of a Maker-Educator intensive as Professional Development for K-12 STEAM educators. This will be hosted at the Makerspace, located within the 1819 Innovation Hub. This opportunity will be offered to up to 25 participants, Monday through Friday from June 3th to 14th. Following these two weeks of flexible trainings, work sessions, discussions, and reviews there will be an optional 6 weeks of open Makerspace access. A small stipend will be provided.
