Last month, PEWS hosted Sustainability@UC week, which featured events geared towards students, educators and the public, all focused on sustainability efforts on campus and in the Cincinnati community.
Dr. Mitchel Thomashow, former President of Unity College and leader in environmental learning, visited University of Cincinnati from January 29th to February 2nd. He brought outside prospectives to campus, inspiring both faculty and students to engage in sustainability conversations and practices.

Events included a breakfast meeting with the PEWS Sustainability faculty affiliates who organized Dr. Thomashow’s visit; a working lunch focused on exploring ideas for sustainability education across disciplines and UC colleges; a workshop for student leaders on campus; a public lecture; and a visit to Dr. Townsend-Small’s environmental studies class for followup discussion the day after the lecture.
At the student workshop, leaders of student organizations including UC Net Impact and UC Electric Vehicle shared their ideas for sustainable practices at UC and gained insights from Dr. Thomashow about actions taken on other campuses and ways to inspire other students to become involved.

On Thursday, Dr. Thomashow delivered a keynote lecture to an audience of UC students, faculty, and the broader public. Dr. James Mack, Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, gave introductory remarks. Over 90 attendees learned more about Dr. Thomashow’s vision for the “Future of Environmental Education.” The talk was based on his most recent book, To Know The World, which promotes ecological awareness and discusses human connection to the biosphere.
A recording of Dr. Thomashow’s keynote lecture will be available on website and YouTube channel soon. Stay tuned for this announcement.
