Please join Physics + Dance Lab @ UC for our showing of We Lift Each Other, a documentary following veterans as they use dance exploration and performance to find pathways toward hope, connection, and recovery. The film highlights North Carolina dance company, Black Box Dance Theatre, in their work with veterans, and we are fortunate to be joined by Black Box Dance Theatre for the event. Attendees will have the opportunity to discuss Black Box Dance Theatre’s dance outreach work with Michelle Pearson, Artistic Director and Alfredo Hurtado, Purple Heart Army Veteran and Associate Artistic Director of BBDT following the showing.
We Lift Each Other is a powerful documentary that reveals how transformative art can change lives, heal communities, and illuminate the extraordinary resilience of our nation’s veterans. The film follows a group of Asheville veterans in their work with Raleigh-based Black Box Dance Theatre in the summer of 2023. Through a healing-centered process, these veterans navigate recovery, reclaim their stories, and discover new pathways toward connection and hope. The collaboration culminated in a moving public performance at Asheville’s Wortham Center.

Their journey demonstrates how non-fiction dance can foster belonging, ignite resiliency, and mend what trauma has fractured. The project has been recognized statewide and nationally as a model of hope—a testament to the ability of the arts to transform lives.
The screening will take place on Thursday August 6th from 5:30-7:00 pm at Main Street Cinema, which is located within UC’s Tangeman University Center.

This event is organized in conjunction with Physics + Dance Lab @ UC, an interdisciplinary summer program in which participants explore concepts from quantum physics through dance. The Physics + Dance Lab will culminate with a performance of original dance pieces inspired by quantum physics, which will take place on Friday August 7th from 6:00-8:00 pm at Patricia Corbett Theater, located within the Corbett Center for the Performing Arts at UC.
